2006: The year in music.

December 31, 2006

Now of course; I will reinform you, upon the basis of common knowledge, that I have not listened to EVERY single album released this year. Nor have i given certain genres (country, rap, pop) and artists (nickelback, good charolette) a chance. But from what I have heard, which is a lot, and based on my opinions, this is 2006: The year in music. (all the links will open in a new window. so click them all)

Favorite albums of 2006

1 Decemberists – Crane Wife (October 3, 2006)

Crane wife

One very important aspect i look for in rating older bands new cds is ‘have they improved from their last cd?’The crane wife shows so much improvement in all aspects, including colins songwriting, the emphasis of the organ player and they have done a wonderful job in creating an ambience that fit the story of “the crane wife”. Colin has grown to become my favorite modern day songwriter, very smart, very romanticistic in the sense of his use of history and story telling.

  • Favorite tracks: O’valencia; shankill butchers; summersong

2 Red Hot Chili Peppers- Stadium Arcadium (May 9, 2006)

One of the things i regret most this year is not getting a job earlier so that i could afford a $70-$80 ticket to see my favorite band of all time. I get so sad when I see them on tv or in a magazine and think of all the people who just got tickets because they were bored or kind of liked that ‘californication’ song. I promise i’ll come see you guys next time around. Anyway. RHCP couldn’t dissapoint me if they did nickelback covers. Not to say that stadium arcadium was below par, and the only reason i like it is because i’m border line obsessive about them. Not even close. This is an amazing cd with so much diversity. Every single person in the band is the best at what they do. You can try to argue that there is a more unique and talented bass player (in a band) than flea, but that would be a lie, a MF lie and thats unacceptable. Frusciante has been given the title of my favorite guitar player ever, and you can see the impact that john has had on this album. He had plenty of time to find his style with that vast array of solo cd’s he put out a couple years ago. This is the first cd where john has used his hauting melodies and guitar style to enhance the band and bring them to their full potential. You can really see how much energy/time/emotion that they all put into this cd(s), there is no other band, as far as i’m concerned, who work better together and who keep improving the style they invented almost 20 years ago. Not my favorite cover art though.

  • Favorite Tracks- Snow; Slow cheetah; Hard to concentrate; Hey

3 Joanna Newsom- Ys (November 14, 2006)

F*ck she’s a cutie. I had the priviledge of seeing her live and she sounds exactly like she sounds on her cd’s. There is no dubbing of her voice, no distortion. What you hear is what you get, it’s very raw, and thats the way i like my music, but not my hot dogs, i’de rather cook those in a microwave and cut them up in some mac & cheese. ‘Ys’ is flawless. Just five songs long that take up close to an hour. Reminds me of music from one of those weird animated short movies about animals. It’s hard to describe. Theres something about her voice that really reminds me of Shelly Duvall in Popeye the movie, yes! thats a perfect example.

  • Favorite Tracks- THE WHOLE F’in THING.

4 Belle & Sebastian- The Life Pursuit (February 7, 2006)

They call it dream-pop, or something strange. But i can see where that comes from. It’s very upbeat, flowing, magical music. It’s the kind of music you would have sex to because it’ll keep you in an even better mood, especially after you realize that you can now tell all your friends you made love while listening to belle & sebastian, kind of a fantasy for me. *one day it’ll happen*. I’ll admit this doesn’t have the durabilty of the prior “Dear Catastrophy waitress” album, but it does have the same ambience. Like i said earlier, it’s dreamy, upbeat and it’s hard to be in a bad mood while listening to it. I’ve tried it. I tried to sit down and listen to this cd while i was pissed off. Doesn’t work. Thats why we have *trash rock like disturbed and linklin park. I’m a sucker for that angel-esque voice of Mr. Stuart Murdoch, it’s very comforting, very distinct. Stuart (singer & songwriter) is very easyily in my top 3 song writers list. It’s a very unique style, and it’s very upfront. It’s just like reading a story book where the author tells a story about his memories including really weird irrelevant details. It’s beautiful. ” She’s getting off the plane
She wants to write a thesis on the population underprivileged
The kids fighting up the lane
Shop lifting, just drifting
Like The Switchblade And The Cross
But if there’s trouble she’s got the moves
She’s taking an elementary class in Kung Fu

  • Favorite Tracks- Blues are still blue; Dress up in you; Another sunny day

* music listened to by kids who wear metalic ball necklaces, lugz and jncos.

5 Mountain Goats- Get lonely (August 22, 2006)

The songwriting style/voice and melodys of this cd is very comforting for me. Definatly reminds me of a late friend. Like i said before, i like my music raw, and this is pretty raw. He definatly doesn’t have a pretty voice, but it’s unique, it’s comforting and honest. It’s kind of sad, and kind of happy, and it happens kind of at the same time. who ever thought that you can sing ” cant get you, outta my head, lost without you, half dead” to an upbeat strumming acoustic guitar. I’m really into comparing cd’s to certain books or movies, so to stick to tradition; this album reminds me of a movie like american splendor or the soundtrack to steve buscemi’s life. Just my opinion though. Steve may lead a very upbeat belle and sebastian life, making love in an upbeat thrusting style… ok.

ryan gish is a bug-a-boo

December 30, 2006

he keeps following me around and he’s buggin me, buggin me , buggin me.

Then michael malone put a bunch of sucky sticks on his car, and it was so funny. i laughed really hard. One said ‘cowgirl’ and the other had an elephant on it that said something really gay. then plus the butterfly ’self-esteem’ sticker we put up a month ago. man his car is lame.

I went to my maxillofacial surgeon today. it was 2 years ago that i had my surgery. and i just brought my book because i knew they take forever there. so i sit for about 30 minutes reading, then they call me in and i take a couple x-rays of my face. takes about 2 minutes. and then they put me in a room and i sit and read for another 30 minutes. the doctor comes in tells me to open up my mouth , he moves a mirror around my mouth inbetween my lips and gums then says ‘ok, looks good… you wearing a retainer? ‘ yes’ ok then, i’ll see you again in a year’ takes maybe 45 seconds, maybe shorter. not even joking or exgagurahting because i dont even know how to spell that word.

then i couldn’t find a wii controller anywhere. but i did run into a mister jake johnson in the parking lot, and we spoke for a few breif minutes that seemed to fly like seconds. then got some t-bell, they ruined my order terribly and i was pissed, it was the low point of my day. the high point would be my dinner date with ryan gish at dairy queen, then i lied to him and told him i got the cashiers number, and i showed him some other girls number in my phone. and i dont know if you guys know it, but i got a buy one get one free coupon there, so if anybody wants to join me before the 31st, let me know.

and i almost forgot. they were playing the bug-a-boo cover me and sam did at hotskates today, and this guy comes up to mishky and says ‘these guys have an album out?’ . hahahaha.

Feeling left out like the scum of the earth? and like guns and trucks way too much ?  Join the military. you’ll fit in just right.

I’ve just found out that Laura Gibson will be playing in medford on the 10th of january. so request the day off, and dont make plans. She’s wonderful, and just wait, she’s going to be big, and you can say that you saw her before than. And i’m going to see if maybe she is single and maybe i can show her a good time around medford.

I watched little miss sunshine last night and it was amazing. I dont know if it was just me, but it was also really sad. I maybe cried 3-5 times. :( but the f’in perv police man made me laugh pretty good. ‘ooooh great, i love these’ And I get to work tomorrow. good thing i’m not a cashier, people are going to be throwing fits when they find out sears is out of everything and they cant exchange their metrics for standards.

Heres what it will look and sound like;

“you hippies can take that socket set and shove it up your ass”

and then he’s going to go home and talk with his buddies while watching ‘deal or no deal’ yeah, i told those guys at sears to go shove that socket set up their ass! and all his friends will laugh it up and that one guy with the smokers caugh will do his smokers laugh and then we will all  realize that all old people can do when they are angry is tell people to shove things in their assholes. It’s very cliche. come on blues and grays, get a better line because us youngies are gonna come back with something like… “you want that thing in my ass so bad why dont i give you my number and we can arrange a nice anal sex with foriegn objects sesh… you bring the lube sweetheart” (slap on the backside) then they’ll say something else cliche like ” go to hell you fucking faggot” and then the guy with the smokers laugh will laugh it up with his raspy expressions of joy that nobody can stand. why do we even HANG out with you smokers cough (thats his nickname when he’s not around)

You ever play that pokemon snap? oh wow. It’s a fucking picture taken game, you take picptures of pokemon. I got such a good shot of charmander, got like 5000 points for it.

play pokemon snap on 64 for 2 hours.Take four of the blue ones , not the red ones, those make you lactate. and then go outside to take a pee in the cold rain instead of the bathroom because the bathroom takes too much work ( i realized how fucking stupid and lazy that was after i thought about it just now). Then watch this video.

Today i was recording this song for ryan gish, and then i justtttt got finished and he called me. it was a sign. a sign from Bono/jesus. i dont know the difference.
