The mustache becomes emo… it catches the tears.

I decided to go to warped tour this year although i’m not into the scene at all anymore. Once upon a time punk music was about rebelling and political statements and fuck war. Now it’s about crying and god and love. The only reason i went was so i could see one of my favorite song writers Greg Graffin and his top notch political band Bad Religion. My all time favorite punk band ever, and i got right up front some how, great show. And i’ve always been fond of Flogging Molly, where else would you have seen a banjo and accordion at warped tour? although Tiger Army did bring out a steel guitar, they are everything Afi could have been if they didn’t fuck up (miss murder). I was also prepared to see pepper cause i liked them a whole lot once upon a time, and i was surprised when i saw them, not a good surprise, they are really really sexual and perverted, and i have a pretty high tolerance of perversion trust me. But they were good performers, i’ll give them that. We also saw mike vallely’s band, which is the fellow from cky videos who beats the shit out of people(s). It was a nice little treat seeing coheed and cambria there as well… one thing i never understood at warped tour was the see of ‘rock on’/'devil horns’ thrown up in the air. the fist is acceptable at a punk show, but the devil horns are just kind of over-played .
the video below is a guy i recently found, although he’s been around for awhile. Final Fantasy is his stage name. but he plays violin and has a recorder that loops his stuff and it’s controlled by a foot pedal. it’s really cool stuff, and he has a nice voice too. kind of like beruit. I guess he toured with them as well, and arcade fire…

For all of us against Medfords “livin’ my life vicariously through Kyle singler” association (LLVTKSA), can i get a ‘Hip Hip’…
Let our voices be heard. Medford is more than a good basketball player, we don’t want people going through medford being like “hey, isn’t that basketball player Kyle Singler from here?” …

Jamirotastic
August 15, 2007
welcome past and future Jamiroquists. It’s summertime and we’re miserable with this disease called SBD. Especially prevalent in males. But I talked to Jamiroquia last night after expressing some anger words towards my situation. And it wasn’t a vision, or a dream, it was like real. I know this jesus guy never makes real apperances. but Jamiroquia comes to me, and talks to me when i have problems, he doesn’t beat around the bush, nor beat around a burning bush… but he does beat around a george w bush. Anyway, Sweaty Back Disorder(SBD) does have a cure, and the cure is patients. Fall and Winter are an unfaltering inevitability so once the earths rotation has fallen away from the sun, our backs shall excrete fluids no more. But no magic cure, our god doesn’t work like that.
So i’ve been trying to listen to this new Okkrevil river cd, i’ve listened to their older stuff, and never could get into it, and although all the praise for their new effort, i still find myself struggeling to find uniqueness in their music. I read a magazine that said ‘ if you like arcade fire, wilco ….then you’ll like this band’… but no, don’t see it. Maybe one of these days i’ll find their good side.
Been listening to Gogol Bordello a lot recently, never really got the gypsy punk scene until recently. It’s a lot of fun, one of those rare artists that you can’t help but listen to with a smile.
Currently listening to Blind Willie Johson. I’ve found that this low-fi folk music i’ve been craving has led me to this old style blues. Very similar genres, but of course blues music is the root of most all music. So looking back on my musical life, i find myself descending.

- starting with the shittiest stuff you can think of (mainstream hip hop, pop and rap)
- then to screamo/metal (avenged sevenfold, underoath, from autumn to ashes)
- then alternative music (bravery, red hot chili peppers hot hot heat)
- then to indie pop (belle & sebastian, decemeberists, aberfeldy)
- then to acoustic indie (elliott smith, neutral milk hotel, mountain goats)
- to mainstream folk ( avett brothers, brett dennen, dolly patron)
- to freak-folk (devendra banhart, joanna newsome, cocorosie)
- to underground folk (ian thomas, woody pines, curtis eller)
- to roots folk/country ( bob dylan(the freewheelin’), woody guthrie, hank william)
- to blues ( blind willie johnson, robert johnson, fred mcdowell)… where does it go after that?
but i’m enjoying the journey to the heart of music, i’m finding more human emotion and soul the further i go. I’m hoping that eventually i can discover what music is supposed to be. I know a lot of people have found out, they may seem pretentious and snobby, but they are allowed to be. And i know that i’m already kind of pretentious with my music talk, but i feel that i’m allowed to be. Same with Mr. Sabori…
Somewhere music split into two, one part was the internal part of music, the other being the external apperance of music. The external part is what we now call mainstream, it’s mainstream because it has a pretty face and a subliminal message behind it all. We all know the current pop songs, even those of us who don’t listen to it, it creeps into our everyday lives, but then we have no idea how we know my humps by black eyed peas. If we are given the ability to hear, we will hear it. Much like if we were blind, we wouldn’t see any advertisments… (this is a reason why blind people make amazing music) But don’t worry, the internal part is still around, but if you want to find the internal part all you have to do is stop being lazy and look for it cause it’s not going to show up on tv or the radio. It’s way down in the ground, get your shovel.

“indie” kids
August 14, 2007
stop trying so hard. what makes the scene is the music (unsigned acts/independently produced), not the other way around. if that makes any sense. i see kids carrying on these hobbies, interests or styles that they think are part of this “indie” scene, so in order to be more ‘indie’ they start doing these certain stereotypical things… here are some examples…
- Record collections
- Taking polaroid pics
- Funky sweaters
- Comparing every soft/airy/dreamy acoustic act to iron and wine
- Wearing glasses
- This one is a misconception: Listening to death cab/shins/decemberists
Once upon a time emo wasn’t frowned upon, but it got so over exaggerated that it was just silly. I feel that ‘indie’ kids are starting this same trend. It’s supposed to be about minimalism, much like the artists, who starve themselves and don’t buy nice things , live out of a van and on friends couches to support their music. They play local shows to get money to record cd’s , then they use that money to buy gas to tour. I’m not sure where all these stereotypes and misconceptions came from, but they need to stop.

lonesome shack blues
August 11, 2007
Pickathon was a grand time. i can’t really blog it into words but i’ll try. langhorne slim, rev. peytons big damn band, jason
webley, two man gentlemen band, sassparilla, avett brothers, trample by turtles, ian thomas, hunger mountain boys, horse feathers… plenty more good music as well. These musicians are really the most hard working artists out there, fuck what you’ve heard about hip hop , pop, alternative or screamo/emo bands being hard workers, every single one of these artists knows there instruments like the inside of their womens vagina, or the backside of their own penis if they don’t have a women… And over half of them are self produced artists, driving their own tour buses, burning copies of their own cds and using merch money for gas. ..friendly laid back crowds hippies, hipsters, hippie hipsters, indie kids, families, old folks, jamiroquists… The live acts these guys all put on were so much fun, especially jason webley and avett brothers and two man gentlemen band. They create this energy out of thin air where most musicians have to receive it through audience excitement. Jason WEbley could grasp the attention of a crowd of 15 year old masturbators right before they’re about to climax. ” oh this feels so good, but what the hell is that over there? that looks like a lot of fun”… … i hate singling these people out cause everybody put on great shows… some photomemories for your viewing pleasures.

.

Some great new music i’ve recently purchased:
