stop trying so hard. what makes the scene is the music (unsigned acts/independently produced), not the other way around. if that makes any sense. i see kids carrying on these hobbies, interests or styles that they think are part of this “indie” scene, so in order to be more ‘indie’ they start doing these certain stereotypical things… here are some examples…
- Record collections
- Taking polaroid pics
- Funky sweaters
- Comparing every soft/airy/dreamy acoustic act to iron and wine
- Wearing glasses
- This one is a misconception: Listening to death cab/shins/decemberists
Once upon a time emo wasn’t frowned upon, but it got so over exaggerated that it was just silly. I feel that ‘indie’ kids are starting this same trend. It’s supposed to be about minimalism, much like the artists, who starve themselves and don’t buy nice things , live out of a van and on friends couches to support their music. They play local shows to get money to record cd’s , then they use that money to buy gas to tour. I’m not sure where all these stereotypes and misconceptions came from, but they need to stop.

do you not like death cab/shins/decemberists music, or just the people who act like death cab/shins/decemberists music is still indie?

i love them all , just people including them in their indie collection. or telling people they …”listen to indie music like the shins and death cab…”
